Pheonix

I've never really noticed Pheonix. I'd heard some of thier songs in movies or on the radio and enjoyed them to a degree, but they had never really grabbed my attention.

That was until I heard the song "Lasso" from their new album Wolfgang Amadus Pheonix.

The track is two minutes and fifty seconds of pop perfection. I hightly reccomend you give it a listen if you haven't already.

I've heard a few of their other tracks and will definatly be buying myself a copy of thier new album when I'm well enough to go out. And cashed up enough, of course.

Okkervil River

When I'm sick my taste in music becomes even more questionable than it usually is. One time I listened to nothing but Asian pop for a week and a half. Another time I found my dad's old cassettes and listened a ridiculous amount of Elvis for a fortnight.

It's lucky, I suppose, that this time I came across a band that wasn't completely terrible.
For the last month I have listened to nothing but Okkervil River. I don't know how it started. I could be because I bought the Stand-Ins a few months ago. It could be because they make music that is sinus infection friendly. Or it could be because they're awesome. Either way, it's bordering on fangirl-type obsession.

Okkervil River are playing some Australian shows in May as well as the Groovin' The Moo festivals around the country. I'm not going to any of these shows due to lack of finances and age restrictions so all of you who are going have to tell me how it was and make me incredibly jelous. All the details of the shows can be found on their myspace.

Record Store Day

There is no better way to spend an afternoon than in a record store. There is something exicting about walking in a room full and CDs and records and going though each shelf picking things up and having to make the agonising desicion about whether you really need to buy 7 albums when you won't get paid for another six days. Add to this passionate staff who know everything there is to know about music and you've got youself a music junkie's dream.

Today is Record Store Day. All day independant record stores around the country, and the world are celebrating by offering discounts, competitons and instore perfomances.

So if you're sitting at home with nothing to do, go down to your local independant record store and buy some new music. Your ears will be smiling, the artists will be smiling and your wallet will be signifigantly lighter. Awesome!

For all the details head to:

www.recordstoreday.com

or, if you're in Australaia

www.recordstoreday.com.au

In case any of you are wondering why I'm sitting at a computer instead of buying copious amounts of music, I have a sinus infection from hell and the last time I tried going to a record store it resulted in tram-sickness. Which is lovley. There's nothing quite like nausea in public places.

The Harpoons

There are some great 60's inspired bands coming out of Melbourne at the moment. This isn't to say that Melbourne is a backwards city, it's far from it (execpt of course when it comes to public transpot).
Like fellow Melbounians Little Red, The Harpoon play 60's inspired pop like they were there when it happened. The key difference between the two bands however is the harmonies. While Little Red make good use of harmonies it often feels like overkill. While The Harpoons also make use of harmonies, it is much more understated and makes the music sound like something you might find on a record from your Grandma's house, which is a very good thing.

They have some shows coming which can be found on their myspace as well as a demo that you can buy if you like what you hear.
